Solar Cambridge FAQs

Would Solar Panels Need Planning Permission?

For most properties installing solar panels does not require planning permission because there covered within permitted development rights.

There are certain exemptions to this. These include if the property is within a conservation area or if the building is listed. That does not mean you can not have a solar panel system on your property. We have experience in navigating the process smoothly and successfully.

Does My Roof Need to Be Facing South?

You can have a very productive solar panel system on east and west-facing roofs and shallow-pitched north-facing roofs. Systems not south-facing can generate 70%+ of the electricity of a south-facing system.

In practical terms, if you have a large east, west or north-facing roof, placing more panels onto those can represent better value than a small south-facing system.

Does It Have to Be Sunny to Work?

Not at all. The photovoltaic cells on a solar panel do not require direct sunlight to generate electricity.

Fortunately for residents of Cambridge, solar panels will continue to work on overcast days. Photovoltaic cells use the photons in all light, so as long as there is light, they will generate power for your property. It is true they will generate more electricity in stronger sunlight.

Do Solar Panels Need Much Maintenance?

The panels are made from no moving parts and are hassle-free. Their surface will gradually get dirty from birds, leaves and traffic pollution, which could affect their performance. We advise having them checked every few years.

How long will Solar Panels Last?

Again due to their lack of moving parts, solar panels can last over 25 years with little drop off in their electricity generation. Having them checked and the system maintained is advisable and could help keep the system performing longer.
